This preliminary study aims to identify areas, solution approaches and system effects of automation of production processes in the rail freight system based on market requirements and conditions. The intention is furthermore to identify how rail's competitiveness can be strengthened with the support of automation. Furthermore, the ability to exploit the experience and solution approaches for automation in other modes of transport - primarily road - mapped. The study includes both rolling stock freight transport infrastructure, such as marshalling yards and other terminal facilities and breakpoints. Some of the actions referred to be put on a survey of strategic technical systems such as automated storage and transshipment technology and automated switching and marshalling systems including automated coupling- and decoupling of carriages (automatic coupler). The feasibility study also intends to identify the state of research and R&D competence in Sweden in the field of automated freight transport by rail. Purpose and goal: The aim is to prepare for future R&D activities in the field of automation within Shift2Rail. The goal is to produce recommendations for future research and developmental focus in this area and to create a basis for the compilation and definition of specific R&D projects, including possible demonstrators. The feasibility study will also allow for a strong involvement of the Swedish R&D actors in Shift2Rail cooperation at European level. |
