There is reason to differentiate track access charges with respect to the vehicles types' contribution to the wear and tear of the rail infrastructure, which requires knowledge on the marginal cost of wear and tear caused by the different vehicle types. The objective with this project is to estimate the marginal cost of rail infrastructure usage, differentiating between vehicle types. The project makes use of engineering models to simulate the wear and tear - allocated between four deterioration mechanisms - caused by the vehicles on the Swedish railway network during one year. Econometric models are used in the second stage of the project to estimate the relationship between maintenance costs and the different deterioration mechanisms. The results may then be used to establish track access charges for wear and tear with respect to vehicle type.
