The stiffness of asphalt concrete is directly related to pavement quality and is used in thickness design of pavements. However, the strong time and temperature dependency of asphalt concrete makes it challenging to accurately measure the stiffness. Methods to determine stiffness of asphalt concrete has traditionally required expensive equipment and been time consuming to perform. A recently developed method using impact hammer modal testing is economic, accurate and simpler to perform. The purpose of this project is to further develop this test method from manually applying the impact to an automated system to excite and measure the resonance frequencies of asphalt concrete specimens. An automated system eliminates possible temperature variations in the specimens since the door to the climate chamber can be closed during the test sequence. The aim of the project is that modal testing to determine the stiffness of asphalt concrete will be easy to apply with good accuracy.
