The marine sector needs to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050 to fulfil its contribution to GHG emission reduction targets. Relying on general efficiency improvements will not be enough to meet these targets - an alternative fuel needs to be introduced - one that results in significantly lower GHG emissions and has the potential to be produced in large volumes. Earlier projects have identified methanol as an alternative fuel that fulfils these criteria. The objective of the GreenPilot project is to demonstrate that the use of methanol as a fuel can reduce the environmental impact and improve the competitiveness of vessels trafficking inland waterways and archipelago areas as well as smaller ships operating in coastal waters. This will be done by converting a pilot boat to methanol operation to show how a methanol conversion of a smaller vessel can be carried out in practice and to demonstrate the emissions reductions that can be achieved.
