Methanol has been identified as a very good alternative to replace oil based fuels in the maritime sector, which also corresponds to the Swedish Energy Agencys analysis of one molecule fules. More stringent environmental requirements have created the development of alternative fuels and today there exist large marine methanol engines. However there are no methanol alternatives in the smaller engine segment. In SUMMETH these engines will be developed with focus on energy and cost efficiency. Recommendations are given for the introduction of methanol in costal and inland waterways sector with the aim to reduce emissions and carbon footprint. SUMMETH will explore the possibilities for the existing maritime market to adapt to methanol use, test and evaluate various methanol combustion tecqniques and provide recommendations for in-board system and adaptions required for the installation of these systems. Distribution and availability of renewable methanol for shipping will also be evaluated.
