The main goal of this project is to develop a novel "smart" crack self-healing concrete based on new combinations of Portland cement based binders. The concrete enables a design and manufacture of transportation infrastructure which will be significantly more durable requiring less maintenance in comparison with existing technologies. The solution will thus be more cost effective and sustainable. The following project objectives have been identified: 1. Verification of the actual self-healing mechanism and effects of various exposure; conditions on speed and degree of self-healing process; 2. Verification of the effect on chloride intrusion and thus durability; 3. Development of smart crack self-healing concrete fulfilling requirements for normal and high strength concretes; 4. Determination of potential benefits in terms of lower CO2 emissions and cost savings. The project aims to address the research questions established in Section 2.3 regarding self-healing mechanism, possible widths of cracks to be healed, climate and environment conditions, estimations of CO2 and costs. Each research question will be studied by utilizing national and world-wide scientific experience and, as a very important input, know-how from practical engineers familiar with the problems |
