The objective of the proposed project is to leverage crowdsourced data to better understand interstate mobility and congestion in Alabama. The results can be used by state employees and consultants to make changes and improvements to enhance mobility and safety. Crowdsourced data is a new and emerging data set that has been piloted in a couple of Alabama counties, but a statewide exploration will help to characterize operations across the entire state. The characterization can be used to identify areas with congestion concerns. From a safety standpoint, congestion on the interstate is a cause for crashes due to queuing and large speed differentials. Assessing the statewide interstate mobility performance will include producing a prioritized list of concerns (highly-congested areas) and possible countermeasures or improvements that might be made to improve conditions. As the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) reorganizes from districts into regions, these same techniques will be used at a regional level to help the region offices prioritize concerns and potential projects within their newly inherited areas of responsibility. A graphical report will be compiled featuring performance measures useful in identifying recurring and non‐recurring congestion, both of which are operational and safety concerns. The report will be useful to ALDOT employees for maintenance, operations, planning, and project programming. |
