Federal, state and regional transportation and air quality plans identify bicycling and walking as important transportation modes for the future. These forms of non-motorized transportation can improve mobility, prevent automobile pollution, and increase the livability of our communities. Planning for non-motorized travel often centers on providing safer transportation opportunities. As bicycling and walking increase in popularity, safety remains an important issue in North Central Texas. Nationwide, about 900 bicyclists and 6,500 pedestrians are killed annually. In 1993, 51 bicyclists and 455 pedestrians were killed in Texas alone. The purpose of this report is to establish a base line of knowledge on safety issues and to set strategies and goals for the improvement of bicycle and pedestrian safety in North Central Texas. |
