There has been much discussion in our community and beyond regarding the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and what it can bring to our industry. And for good reason. This bill supports $1.2 trillion in infrastructure spending over the next nine years, of which almost half is dedicated to roads, bridges and major infrastructure projects. In addition, there is $65 billion dedicated to broadband deployment. Add to this, tens of billions of dollars will be spent in broadband to support other aspects of the IIJA, improving middle mile infrastructure, intelligent transportation systems and overall reducing the costs and improving connectivity. All of this broadband connectivity provides considerable opportunities for the industries and services that support broadband connectivity. For many, broadband is synonymous with fiber optics and historically, most broadband deployments were fiber optics based. That no longer needs to be the case, technology has continued to evolve and brings us a new generation of wireless broadband technology that complements and, in some cases, competes with traditional fiberoptic installations. |
