The Office of Internet Connectivity and Growth at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), located within the Department of Commerce, oversees administering $48.2 billion of the $65 billion in funds. The Department of Commerce recently launched its "Internet for All" initiative under the IIJA - releasing notices of funding opportunities for several major programs: 1. BEAD (Broadband Equity Access and Deployment) Program - $42.45 billion to be distributed among states, territories, D.C., and Puerto Rico, for projects that support broadband infrastructure deployment and adoption 2. Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Grant Program - $1 billion to expand and extend middle mile infrastructure to reduce the cost of connecting unserved and underserved areas to the internet backbone 3. Digital Equity Act - $2.75 billion 3.1 State Digital Equity Planning Grant Program - a $60 million formula grant program for states and territories to develop digital equity plans 3.2 State Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program - a $1.44 billion formula grant program for states and territories to implement digital equity projects and support the implementation of digital equity plans 3.3 Digital Equity Competitive Grant Program - a $1.25 billion discretionary grant program for specific types of political subdivisions to implement digital equity projects 3.4 Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP) - an additional $2 billion will be provided to the existing NTIA program. Funding will go to tribal governments to be used for broadband deployment on tribal lands, as well as for telehealth, distance learning, broadband affordability, and digital inclusion. |
