The transportation industry has come a long way since the days of the horse & buggy. People riding horses, horses drawn wagons, bicycles, and pedestrians, all led to extreme congestion at intersections within cities. The first recorded method of controlling traffic congestion was a gas filled, revolving lantern that was operated by a police officer in 1868 in London, England. The gas-filled lantern and the various semaphore devices that followed were all operated by police officers standing at each intersection. |
