Every project needs a site compound; it may need working platforms and in the case of brand new roads or other major infrastructure projects, it will likely need a haul road too. All three have traditionally been seen simply as a means to an end - constructed the same way for decades, with little thought given to the environmental impact. Things are changing. As wider discussions take place around reducing carbon and waste across the whole of the construction industry, the status quo is being challenged more than ever. Soil enhancement technology, used to improve the base layer of a new road has been around for centuries. The Romans used it and it's still used in permanent road building today. Soil enhancement can be mechanical or chemical; the latter involves using a binder such as cement, lime or other materials and additives to improve workability, add strength and enhance longevity. |
