Winter 2022-23 saw the cost of salt alone increase by 10%, combined with a national shortage of HGV drivers and the usual day and night job i.e. the notoriously unpredictable nature of UK weather. Technological solutions can help winter managers tackle these problems by improving efficiency and productivity, reducing costs and increasing safety standards. In recent years, confidence has been increasing when it comes to adopting automated driving tasks. This winter, nearly eight in 10 councils in the UK were using GPS systems to record gritter 'missions' and the volume of salt spread. However, these systems are typically one-way - with the spreader programmed in advance and the in-cab technology simply reporting where it has been and the job it has completed. After extensive international trials, winter vehicle manufacturer Bucher Municipal is rolling out Bucher Assist. Moving on from route programming and automated salt spreading, this system offers two-way communication between the spreader and decision-maker, to deliver connected data-led de-icing that can be as responsive as the client's risk parameters allow. |
