As reported in the May 2021 issue of Buses, March 15, 2021 saw Bath & North East Somerset Council (BaNES) introduce a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) within a designated area of the City of Bath. This World Heritage city therefore became the first in Britain - outside London - so designated. Significantly however, private cars were uniquely removed from planned restrictions by not including the Government's category D vehicles in the scheme. This followed strong objections from Bath's influential residents. BaNES' own traffic statistics nevertheless reveal that cars and taxis represent over 80% of traffic movements in the council's area. Consequently it was bus and lorry operators who were largely required to upgrade or replace older vehicles at considerable expense, in order to meet the low emission standards. For diesel vehicles this required Euro 6 standards to be achieved and many hauliers invested heavily to meet this. |
