New night buses on four Exeter City routes (Buses last month) were belatedly postponed due to the Omicron Covid variant, which also prompted the RMT union to repeat staff concerns at Stagecoach South West. Route A, E1, I/J and L night buses were advertised to start on January 14, but that day Stagecoach tweeted they were 'postponed due to the current situation with the omicron variant.' Daytime cancellations continue despite some frequency cuts. The union reiterated its claims inadequate Covid controls put staff at risk with resulting shortages causing disruption. Stagecoach refuted the allegations stating extra safety measures protected passengers and staff. RMT Regional Organiser Barry West told Devon Live: "There are serious Covid concerns that have yet to be resolved." He wants more protection for those formerly classified as clinically extremely vulnerable and estimates 18 Exeter staff have Covid. He says no date is agreed to collectively review risk assessments. The RMT also berated Exeter's new compact bus station as having poor ventilation and a much smaller staff room. It reports low staff morale with terms, conditions, low pay and too infrequent toilet breaks still an issue. Stagecoach explains, like others, it faces pandemic staff shortages and it regularly engages with the union. |
