Restored coaches were among the attractions at the Alton Rally on July 17, the first staging since 2019 of this large normally annual Hampshire gathering. These included Western National 1457 (LDV 467F), the Hampshire Bus & Coach Preservation Group's 1968 Bristol RELH6G with ECW body painted in the Royal Blue version of the livery adopted by the National Bus Company's South-west Region in early 1970 for its five coach fleets. All were base white with a coloured waistband (and in this case radiator grille surround) with a prominent capital letters fleetname in Eurostile Bold Extended typeface. The relief colour for Royal Blue was an appropriate dark blue. It was black on the Black & White fleet, pale grey at Devon General's Grey Cars, turquoise at Greenslades and magenta at Bristol Greyhound. The National white identity superseded it two years later, probably changing the opinion of those fans of Royal Blue who, when it first appeared, considered the 1970 livery to be a poor substitute for the traditional dark blue and cream Royal Blue scheme. |
