This year's Alton Bus Rally & Running Day in Hampshire, scheduled for July 16, has been cancelled for a variety of reasons that include a shortage of volunteers to stage what traditionally is one of the biggest bus gatherings of the season. "There have been many contributing factors to this decision," says organiser Claire Fairbrother. "Namely, finding enough volunteers to staff the event safely, lack of facilities for the volunteers on site, and spiralling increases in costs associated with operating such a large event. All this is compounded by the current cost of living crisis, which will no doubt have a negative effect on exhibit attendance and visitor spending at the event. "The Alton Bus Rally had been a successful Watercress Line special event for over 25 years, with many of our staff also volunteering on the railway. However, as the Watercress Line now holds a Diesel Gala on the same weekend as the bus rally, this has reduced our available staff resource. |
