On November 30, it once again became mandatory for face coverings to be worn in transport hubs and on public transport, as well as in shops and shopping centres. The rule change brings England in line with rules elsewhere in the UK. Staff in these settings are also required to wear face coverings, 'when they are in a part that is open to the public' Transport operators can deny access to services, or direct someone to leave the service, if they do not have a legitimate reason to not wearing a mask. The rules are enforceable by police and PCSOs. Both the police and Transport for London offers have powers to hand out £200 fines, which double with each subsequent offence up to £6,400. Some exemptions are in place for children under 11 and those with health conditions or disabilities which prevent the wearing of a face covering. |
