A side-by-side evaluation of road markings has demonstrated an obvious visibility advantage of the structured road markings at night during rain. While the standard flat lines (Type Ⅰ) could not deliver visibility, the structured markings (Type Ⅱ) facilitated moisture drainage and remained visible despite flooding. Previous reports related to the required specific minimum contrast ratio for reliable machine vision recognition (or recognition by human drivers) were shown to inadequately describe the situation. What is necessary is a rather clear distinction of the edges, regardless of the numerical value of the contrast ratio. The improved visibility furnished by structured markings makes driving easier and improves road safety. It is, therefore, surprising that such road markings are usually not demanded by road administrators. |
