The primary purpose of this document is to better equip local emergency management officials within Dickenson County to make informed decisions regarding evacuations during flood events. Dickenson County, Virginia, is typical of other Appalachian regions where streams frequently undergo extreme flow fluctuations resulting in overbank flooding. Due to the highly-dissected and steep slopes of the topography throughout the project area, the majority of the level, developed land is located in flood hazard areas. Consequently, the vast majority of communities and other cultural improvements (including roadways) are threatened by reoccurring floods. The April 1977 flood, ranging between an 88-year and a 100-year flood event, caused approximately $20 million in damage to residential and nonresidential structures. This plan was prepared to supplement the current Dickenson County EOP and help protect life and property from flooding by supplying information to facilitate safe emergency evacuations. |
