摘要: At a recent meeting of the Mississippi River Commission, Maj. Gen. Diana Holland, who is soon to retire after a long and distinguished career, took the opportunity to educate listeners about engineering improvements the Corps of Engineers has made to the Mississippi River. The necessity for these changes, she said, was recognized in the 1960s when ever-rising maintenance dredging expenses threatened to completely consume the Corps' budget. Anything that could reduce these expenses, while upholding the Corps' responsibility for maintaining the 9-foot channel, was considered. Part of the answer proved to be training structures to help the river scour itself, while maintaining a deeper channel and consistent flow and reducing the amount of erosion along the banks. Sophisticated river flow modeling helped best place these resources. Those training structures include weirs, rock dikes and chevrons that channel the river water and coax it to do useful work in scouring the river bottom. Armor along the river's banks reduces the amount of runoff that contributes to shoaling.
