Nestled on a hillside between Ohio State Route 7 and the Ohio River near the small communities of Bradrick and Coryville, Ohio, stands a pristine white church. On the front of the building is mounted a black sign with white letters declaring "DEFENDER. CHAPEL BLT 1905." The marquee sign in front of the building further identifies it as the Defender United Methodist Church. It overlooks the river at approximately Mile 306.3. Bradrick is a part of Union Township, just upstream from Chesapeake, Ohio, and across the river from Hun-tington, W.Va. According to a history of the local area published by The Lawrence Register, the community was once known as Indian Guyan and was the site of an early shipyard. Coryville was once called California Rock due to a large outcrop of rocks (later removed by the Corps of Engineers) on which the packet California wrecked in 1847. The local community once depended on river commerce, but today the bustling industry has long since faded away, and only a few houses remain. However, Defender Chapel stands stoic as modern river traffic passes by, as if it is watching over the location on the opposite shore where the event took place that would provide the name of the house of worship. |
