Transport facilities in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) mainly consist of road and rail network. But, Mumbai being a financial capital of India, the infrastructure is failing to fulfill the needs. Apart from road and rail network, an alternate route of waterway could be a game changer as Mumbai is blessed with creeks and open sea on three sides. The author has suggested that connectivity with available waterway routes could be possible to join available road route within MMR. Methodology adopted by the author is to create alternative routes through waterways by constructing Jetty terminals and connecting those terminals with roads at various locations in National Waterways (NW53). This will be part of integrated plan of transportation to decrease traffic congestion on roads. Author has suggested concept of Waterways as a natural mode of transportation for the commuters and it can be enhanced for goods transportation for national /international trade. Recommendations and conclusions are provided in the end to have socio-economic development and to ease out traffic within MMR as an alternative strategy to support road infrastructure. |
