A decent number of Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control algorithms and experiments have been developed and evaluated in order to improve the performance of traffic by researchers in the last decade.This study was aimed to develop an advanced algorithm of VSL strategy that can be easily implemented.The algorithm can potentially improve traffic performance on a strategic network level and squeeze more benefits for road users from the existing transportation assets and infrastructures.The study developed and evaluated a VSL strategy using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework.A motorway section in Wellington, New Zealand was selected as the test bed.The MPC framework feeds and analyses real time traffic information in every minute;it uses an integrated /modified mesoscopic strategic assignment model (built in SATURN) to predict traffic performance in the 3 minutes future;it utilises a mathematical control algorithm model to make VSL decisions;and it evaluates the traffic performance using a micro simulation model (built in VISSIM).The results showed that, the VSL control algorithm proposed did not have improvements on neither average travel time nor traffic capacity due to the high variability of individual drivers' travel speed. |
