Fundamental Properties of Asphalts and Modified Asphalts, III
项目名称: Fundamental Properties of Asphalts and Modified Asphalts, III
摘要: One of the objectives of this contract is to conduct basic fundamental research, in some cases at the nano-scale, on asphalts and modified asphalts with the objective being the development of a detailed understanding of how the chemical components of asphalt play a role in the performance of an asphalt pavement. Another objective is to understand how modifiers, such as polymers and polyphosphoric acid, interact with asphalt and modify pavement performance. A third objective is to contribute to the development of a refined material selection process (specifications and/or certification methods) that lower the risk of early pavement failure. Western Research Institute will conduct work in five different research areas that are germane to asphalt pavement performance. These include: moisture damage, asphalt aging, nano-technology, low-temperature behavior, modification of asphalts, and the monitoring of specific validation sites. Since the goal of this research is to provide the fundamental scientific basis for predicting and increasing the performance of flexible pavements, such research shall include, in addition to asphalt studies, fundamental aspects of aggregates and of pavements that relate to their performance in asphalt highways. These activities are configured to support the five focus areas included in the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Strategic Pavements Roadmap. It is envisioned that the activities will result in advancement in our understanding of the fundamental properties of asphalt and how they dictate performance. The culmination of this understanding will be the development of tests that will more reliably predict the performance of an asphalt pavement, particularly with respect to moisture and fatigue damage. The longer range plan in this project includes research on the effectiveness of warm mix asphalt technologies and on the use use of reclaimed asphalt pavement. Results of this research will be disseminated to the public through publications, presentations, newsletters, magazine articles, and the WRI website.
