The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) classifies unmarked routes as roadways that are not designated by interstate, U.S., or Illinois signage. Modifications are continuously made to segments of the Illinois state route system, which results in former alignments that are sometimes decommissioned or occasionally abandoned. Typically, however, the road is repurposed as a special route by the local community. IDOT desires a methodology to evaluate, choose maintenance and rehabilitation strategies, and prioritize low-volume roadway segments within their jurisdiction. The research team proposes to develop a nonstandard classification system to assist IDOT with assigning proper maintenance treatments, rehabilitation strategies, and possible abandonment/transfer scenarios for the unmarked category of assets. |
