In metropolitan cities public transportation service plays vital role in mobility of people and it has to introduce new routes more frequently due to fast development of city in terms of population growth and city size. Whenever there is introduction of new route or increase in frequency of buses the non-revenue kilometres covered by buses increases as depot and route starting /ending point are not at same place. This non-revenue kilometres or dead kilometres are the distances travelled by the bus between depot to route starting point and from route ending point to depot without carrying passengers while operating the route. The dead kilometres not only result in revenue loss, but also result in increase in operating cost due to extra kilometres covered by buses. Reduction of dead kilometres is necessary for economic growth of public transportation system. To reduce dead kilometres it is important for public transportation to possess the database of dead kilometres. Therefore, in this study the attention is focused on developing database of dead kilometres to understand dead kilometres in each of the depot for operating the routes and to suggest techniques to reduce dead kilometres. Database for dead kilometres of depots in BMTC for all the schedules was generated using Form-4 (trip sheet) of each schedule to analyse depot-wise and division-wise dead kilometres. An attempt is made to illustrate the savings which can be achieved by reducing the dead kilometres of the Central Division. The Central Division's earlier dead kilometres of 3573.9 kilometres can be reduced to 2381.9 kilometres by use of optimisation technique. Thus, a reduction of 1192 dead kilometres per day is possible in Central Division, which can result in saving of Rs. 73904 per day. This study not only helps in reducing dead kilometres of depots by allocating buses efficiently based on percentage of dead kilometres but also suggests alternative locations where depots can be located to reduce dead kilometres. |
