This paper describes the lane-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System implemented on the Marechal Rondon highway (SP300) in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Marechal Rondon highway runs from the border of Mato Grosso do Sul to the interior city of Botucatu. The ETC System employs a Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) system using American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) v6 compliant transponders and readers. This ETC system technology was proven to work on Toronto's Highway 407 and will be used on a Cross Israel Highway Toll Road, which is a new 86 kilometer, four-lane highway that will stretch from near Jerusalem through Tel Aviv and halfway to Haifa. Two of the three lanes currently being used manually for collecting tolls were provided with Electronic Tolling Collection Equipment. Transponders are required for vehicles using the lanes employing automatic operation. A violator's license plate number is captured with a camera taking a picture of the vehicle's rear license plate. The ETC system, PASSEFACIL, became operational on March 2, 1999. (A*) For the covering abstract see ITRD E110327. |
