Increasingly, transportation professionals are using information processing, communications, and electronic technology, known as Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS), to address transportation problems. ITS has many potential applications to safety issues. ITS should be of interest to transportation professionals at the Washington State Department of Transportation because of a need, as outlined in policy objectives, to continually reduce crashes and increase safety. Unfortunately, relatively little documentation directly outlines ITS's potential safety benefits. This paper addresses this issue by examining the relationship between ITS and safety from an urban perspective. This process is guided by crash statistics from the State of Washington's standard accident report form so that the ITS applications can be discussed in light of the situation on WSDOT's urban roadways. |
