The objectives of this program are (1) demonstrate the wastewater capabilities of biofilters, (2) determine effluent quality, (3) evaluate filter performance, (4) identify operating parameters that achieve effluent standards, and (5) calculate life-cycle system costs. This project tested three skid-mounted biofilters at pilot-scale for organic substrate (BOD5 and TSS) removal, nitrification, and denitrification at the JSTP. The overall average effluent concentrations for both BOD5 and TSS during the entire study were 17 mg/1. The total nitrogen concentration was 6 mg/1. Shock loadings did not have a significant effect on the effluent concentrations of these parameters. Four wet weather simulation tests showed that that the biofilters maintained a relatively high level of treatment during peak weather flows. TSS removed ranged from 88% to 97% and TKN removed was between 72% and 87%. |
