WHEN ROAD EMBANKMENTS AND BRIDGES ARE FOUNDED ON DEEP-LYING, FINE-GRAINED SOILS, LARGE, PREDOMINANTLY VERTICAL DEFORMATIONS OF THE SUBSOIL AND THE FOUNDATION STRUCTURE OCCUR. BY TAKING SAMPLES FROM GEOLOGICALLY TYPICAL AREAS OF AUSTRIA WHERE FINE-GRAINED SOILS OCCUR, AND WHERE IT IS PLANNED TO BUILD LARGE ROAD STRUCTURES, AN EXAMINATION IS TO BE MADE OF THE EFFECTS OF MINERALOGICAL STRUCTURE AND SOIL CONDITION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CREEP DEFORMATIONS. AN EVALUATION OF ALL EXISTING LONG TERM MEASUREMENTS IS ALSO PLANNED. THIS SHOULD IN FUTURE ALLOW EXPECTED DEFORMATIONS TO BE ESTIMATED BY REFERENCE TO SIMPLE VALUES WHICH CAN BE ESTABLISHED IN ANY LABORATORY. |
