摘要: Deformation problems have been observed on newly constructed roads on a clay terrace, normally in a cut, i.e. on never frozen fine-grained materials and at railway embankments constructed of very coarse material with "open" structure on fine-grained materials. The problems are related to freeze/thaw and the penetration of frost front into never frozen materials causing frost heave, consolidation processes with pore pressure build-up and volume reductions and surface settlements. The process is similar to dry crust formation. The increased frost depth is related to the initiation of internal convection in embankments of rock aggregates with an open structure. The aim of the project is to clarify under what conditions the internal convection starts and quantify the effects. Guidelines will be proposed for how internal convection can be avoided in embankments of this type. The impact of freezing and thawing on material below terrace level will be quantified as well as the impact of the number of frost cycles on frost susceptibility. Effect of freeze/thaw can result in either higher or lower frost susceptibility due to changes in soil structure. Testing of the frost heaving properties before and after freezing and thawing will be carried out in laboratory. Assessment will be performed by the use of "segregation potential" value. The results are of particular importance for high-speed railways and other types of similar structures constructed of coarse "open" materials.
