A STUDY IS TO BE MADE OF THE EFFECT OF THE TORSIONAL STIFFNESS OF A LORRY CHASSIS ON THE MAGNITUDE OF WHEEL LOAD FLUCTUATIONS AND STRESSES ON ROADS. A RELATED TASK IS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF DEFLECTION ELASTICITY OF THE CHASSIS OF A LORRY ON WHEEL LOAD FLUCTUATIONS. THESE STUDIES HAVE ALREADY BEEN CARRIED OUT; IT WAS SHOWN THAT WHEEL LOAD FLUCTUATIONS AND ROAD STRESSES CAN BE MARKEDLY AFFECTED. IN THIS RESEARCH A MARKED INFLUENCE OF THE ELASTICITY IS ALSO EXPECTED. WITH TORSION-FLEXIBLE FRAMES AND A GIVEN TWISTINESS OF ROAD, THE RELATIVE MOVEMENTS AND SPEEDS AT THE DAMPERS ARE BALANCED OUT BY TORSION OF THE CHASSIS. THUS LITTLE RESISTANCE IS MADE TO THE DAMPERS WHICH ARE IMPORTANT FOR THE WHEEL LOADS. THIS WOULD IMPLY SIMILAR EFFECTS TO THE REDUCTION OF THE DAMPING CONSTANTS THEMSELVES, I.E. GREATER WHEEL LOADS AND INCREASED ROAD STRESS. THESE RELATIONS ARE TO BE QUANTITATIVELY EXAMINED. |
