THE PROJECT CONSISTED OF THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE SUITE OF PROGRAMS FOR COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN PROCESSING, THE BASIS FOR WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE FIRST PART OF THE WORK. THE DESIGN PROCESSING IS SEEN IN THIS CONTEXT AS TOTAL PROCESSING WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF A TOTAL SOLUTION OF A BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION PROBLEM. THE MAIN LINKS BETWEEN MATERIAL, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, CALCULATION AND MANUFACTURE CAN ONLY BE HANDLED SENSIBLY BY MEANS OF A COMPUTER. THE SUITE OF PROGRAMS WAS EXPANDED SO THAT THE METHOD OF COMPUTER DESIGN COULD BE APPLIED TO ANY DESIRED STEEL BRIDGE CROSS SECTION MADE OF FLAT METAL SHEETS AND OF PIPE SANDWICH CROSS SECTIONS. THE THIRD PART OF THE PROJECT CONSISTED OF A STUDY OF OPERATIONAL STRENGTH OF A PIPE SANDWICH STRUCTURE 16 M IN LENGTH. TESTS WERE UNDERTAKEN IN THE OPEN AIR. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE PIPE SANDWICH GIRDER COULD SUPPORT THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF ALTERNATE LOADS WITHOUT DAMAGE OCCURRING AND THAT THE BOND BETWEEN CONCRETE, STEEL PIPES AND DECK PLATES WAS MAINTAINED.
