The principal aim of this research project is to utilize fiber reinforced polymer, FRP, composites as an alternative for steel in construction of culvert bridge structures. Within this overall aim, there are several sub-aims that relate to the main aim of this project: 1. To identify the areas to be researched when using new materials such as FRPs as bridge construction materials. Examples of these areas are connections and their behavior, long-term performance and durability, fatigue, transportation and on-site assembly, LCC and reparability. 2. To realize and develop a concept for using FRP as a substitute for steel in culvert bridges, this includes design methods with regard to material and manufacturing aspects as well as on-site assembly work. 3. To familiarize the bridge industry with FRP as a reliable construction material for bridges and attract the Swedish FRP production industry and activate it in construction sector. |
