By changing the moisture mechanical properties of the concrete from hydrophilic (water recipient) to hydrophobic (water repellant), chlorine intrusion is limited and lower levels of moisture are archived. Therefore corrosion processes do not have the same opportunity to be initiated. Many exposed concrete structures are surface treated with water repellent impregnants for these purposes. However, the method has limitations as it implies that the agent penetrates the concrete. In modern concrete which is very dense the impregnation depths is very limited. In this proposed doctoral project, hydrophobic additives will be mixed in the concrete to make the whole structure water repellant. Hydrophobic additives and the effect will be investigated and developed. The project mainly explains explanatory models and evaluation methods develop, but a key issue is also what economic and environmental potential hydrophobic concrete has. |
