摘要：	From the mid-1800s, a complete gardening system around the railway in Sweden was organized with plant stores, nurseries and gardeners. Garden plants implemented practical as well as aesthetic features, both along the state railways and along the private ones. The purpose of this research is to investigate how and why railway gardening organisations were formed, organized and then dismantled. Another purpose is to clarify what happened to the archive material and what remains of the green heritage of garden systems linked to the railway. This knowledge improves the opportunity for sustainable maintenance of the railway environments and new approaches regarding sustainable construction. The negative impact on the natural and cultural heritage values by construction and management will thus be reduced. Accumulation of knowledge will be of great value with architecture and design issues at Swedish Transport Administration and also in the process of effective suistainable management of railway enviroments. The historical knowledge is also valuable in today�s work with species richness and biodiversity at Swedish Transport Administration.
