With an extraordinary rise in trucking prices in the end-of-year data, the Department of Labor reports average transaction prices now stand 15.8% above November 2021 levels. That hike was the third one in a row above 15%. Truckload prices in the most recent survey soared 23.9% and TL surged 14.5%. Now we are forecasting the year-over-year inflation rate for trucking will peak at 14.1% in the first quarter of 2022. That's up sharply from a 2.2% peak that we had predicted two months ago. With more drivers and equipment expected as well as the pandemic-induced supply chain snafus hopefully over soon, we tentatively forecast a typically sedate 2.4% average industry price increase in 2022. |
