Funding is provided to the Mississippi State University of Agriculture & Applied Science for the "Virtual Accident and injury Reconstruction (VAIR) Project". The Mississippi State University of Agriculture & Applied Science will develop a virtual accident simulation and reconstruction tools focusing on transportation vehicles (rail system, over-the-road vehicles, aircraft, maritime vessels, trains, etc.) under accident conditions. The research explores their interaction with other vehicles, vehicle cargoes such as hazmat containers, the transportation infrastructure, and potential external forces such as impoverished explosive devices, either during the design phase to mitigate or minimize catastrophic outcomes or to perform an autopsy of the event to understand system failures. This capability offers significant opportunities to evaluate system design and changes as well as modified operator and responder training that can reduce the severity of accidents. |
