Sweden is striving for a transport system that is inclusive, equal and contributes to the reduction of social gaps. To achieve this goal, transport industry in general and maritime in particular have a need for a heterogeneous workforce and new complementary capabilities to cope with the strategic transformations that the industry is going through (e.g. digitalization, automation and service development). Especially important for promoting continuous innovation, is that no one feels excluded because of gender, ethnicity or background. However, one big global challenge in the maritime industry is that the overall percentage of female seafarers is very low (2%) [1]. Despite global recognitions of the importance of a more equal world (e.g. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 goals) [2] the change has been slow and difficult both at organizational and national levels. Here Sweden has a good opportunity as one of six countries that lives up to the World Bank's requirements for gender equality [3]. However, how this world-leading position should be utilized to diversify and increase the recruitment base is unclear, especially in an area such as maritime with its long history and strong culture and traditions. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to identify and analyze barriers to the recruitment of women to the maritime industry and to develop solutions for diversifying and increasing the recruitment base to ensure the supply of competence and competitiveness for the Swedish shipping industry. By applying a usercentered and iterative work method, the project aims to develop and validate possible solutions together with the need owners. |
