Purpose and goal: The purpose of the project is to generate knowledge that is necessary to strengthen the attractiveness of the railway system and its ability to provide transport services. The aim is to contribute to a more reliable and cost-efficient railway system that can generate a shift away from modes of transport with a higher carbon footprint. Expected results and effects: The project shall generate knowledge that infrastructure managers can use to prioritize activities that contribute the most to a resource efficient railway system. Specifically, the project shall establish relationships between asset condition and costs for infrastructure services, as well as between asset condition and delays. In that way, it is possible to create cheaper and more reliable rail transportation. Approach and implementation: By engaging different disciplines and the industry, the project will establish new knowledge based on both engineering (mechanistic) models and econometrics. The plan is to combine the strengths of both these modelling approaches. Contract designs will also be analyzed in order to provide knowledge on how activities can be put into practice in a cost-efficient way, while also providing scope for innovations and productivity improvements. |
