When new roads or railroads are built, there is a possibility to create new habitats and new dispersal corridors for different species of plants and animals. This R&D project studies side areas along a 19 km long new road between Heby and Trnsj in Sweden. During the procurement for the new road, design of side areas was described using functional requirements, i.e. requirements specifying target habitats and target species, without specifying details about how the requirements should be achieved. The aim of this R&D project is to follow up on development of habitats and the establishment of species within the side areas, in order to evaluate whether the use of functional requirements is a practical way to achieve good design of side areas from a conservation perspective. |
