摘要: Battery propulsion is an essential element in order for the maritime sector to reach their environmental goals. The battery type that is high on the agenda for this is Li-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries have many advantages when it comes to energy and power density but has some safety drawbacks including that the electrolyte is combustible and the cells are only thermally stable under certain operating conditions. There is some advice available on how safety should be ensured but there is a lack of testing methods for extinguishing systems to be used for battery fires. There are also some, in some cases contradicting, advice on what extinguishing media is appropriate and there is therefore uncertainty on what type of extinguishing is suitable for battery fires. This project will evaluate different extinguishing media and systems towards fires in Li-ion cells mounted in a purpose built module. Both the experimental set-up and the results of the test will be made publicly available. The project will indicate what systems and media are suitable but no exact design of the systems will be made. Tests will be conducted in RISE Safetys firehall under repeatable conditions against fires in cells mounted in the module and the risk for propagation of a thermal runaway to adjacent cells is evaluated for the different media and systems. Manufacturers of extinguishing systems representing both systems that are adviced on in guidelines and other documents and other systems judged as interesting for this application by the project group
